As Professor of Spanish and Chairperson of the Foreign Language Department, I enjoy
introducing students into a new world through language study. I am also proud of the
individual attention we can give.
The Foreign Language Department offers Spanish and French majors and minors and teaching
majors and minors (see Foreign Language Department). We
also offer first-year and second-year courses which are part of the general education
requirements.
My main interests are teaching and travel. I teach a wide range of classes, from
first-semester Spanish, to second-year, to advanced classes in conversation and
composition, literature, media, and film.
To see first hand the richness of the hispanic world, I have traveled extensively, mostly
to Mexico (see Mexico Study Tour Page), but also to Guatemala (as depicted above),
Ecuador, Peru, Spain, and recently to Cuba.
I have given presentations on various literary topics at conferences in the United States
and Mexico. My research interests include women's writing, Mexican contemporary
literature and culture, and cinema.
I received my B.A. in Spanish from Indiana University and my M.A. and Ph.D. in Spanish
from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
Here are some internet links which we will be using in various courses: Madrid, "Jornada" the Mexican newspaper, and Mexico Today.
For Spring 2001 course description, see Spanish 380/480.

The Foreign Language Department has developed an exciting summer study abroad program in
conjunction with the Centro de Idiomas at the Universidad de Guanajuato in Mexico.
Students spend 4-6 weeks in this beautiful colonial city taking classes in Mexican art,
literature, and history, along with intensive Spanish language training. Students
are immersed in contemporary Mexican culture by living with Mexican families and taking
week-end excursions. For more details, e-mail Andrea
Byrum.
